The North Kennebec Agricultural Society Show and Fair of 1863: Part III

This is part III of the full detailed account of the 1863 North Kennebec Agricultural Society Show and Fair:

MISCELLANEOUS.

To a worsted tidy and an Afghan, or sofa blanket, both presented by Miss Louisa E. Ingals, of Waterville, we award 25 cts. each, for the pleasant idea of domestic comfort suggested by their elegance.
A pair of slippers, neatly wrought by Miss C.A. Gowor, of Winslow,-giving
a hint of the great propriety of introducing this article more generally at the farmhouse, where the proximity of the barnyard to the parlor has a sad tendency to promote scolding-25 cts.
Two tidies, very neatly wrought by Miss Alice Dunbar, 25 cts. each.
A burr basket, made by Miss Ellen Flagg, of Benton, was very tastefully designed and neatly wrought.-25 cts.
Two pairs swifts, entered only for exhibition, one by E. Dunbar and the other by F.A. Davis, are commended to special notice.
Preserved specimens, by Miss Ellen Wentworth, a very fine contribution, which we hope to see again next year, with such additions as the young artist may find time to make.-50 cts.
A pair of Sea Bird Bantams, by MasterCousins, were very much admired, and we award him a volume of Reports, for this and former favors, and also to remind him of the importance of the culture of mind, as well as of farm products-to both which, we happen to know, he gives good attention.
A leather card basket, executed by Mr. G.B. Broad, presented an attractive advertisement of the elegant and ingenious workmanship he is able to devote to his business as a saddle and harness maker. We have never seen a superior piece of work.
A watch case, presented by Mrs. E.C. Lowe, is indeed a jewel.
Mrs. Reuben Eaton presented some ingenious samples of glass work-a cane and a bellows-to one of which we regret to report an accident on its way to the hall. From Mr. Easton came fine samples of the Egg Tomato, a very beautiful kind of this fruit.
Yankee Sleds, F.A. Davis, are made in large numbers for the retail trade. They are specially recommended as Thanksgiving and New Years presents for boys and girls, and will prove an excellent family physician for feeble or ill natured children-and would prove still better for such mothers as have courage to take them.
A case of silver Ware, from the jewelry store a A.J. Alden, and a variety of stoves from the hardware store of Blunt & Coffin, should each call attention to the excellent establishments they represent,-while to each are tendered the thanks of the Society.
E. MAXHAM, for com.
