Yuri Krasnov and Lubov Pisarenkova defected to the Untied States from the Soviet Union in 1986 because Soviet Authorities were restricting their work. They stated the reason they came to the United State was "No Freedom. No freedom as a person, no freedom as an
actor. Everything we did in the Soviet Union, they asked us what does it mean from a Marxist-Leninist position. Everything they wanted to see something political". They then paid off various government officials so they could perform outside the Soviet Union. Once they were in Seychelles, an island north of Madagascar, they took the opportunity to defect. They strive to portray a message that "the circus must teach the children and audience how to be beautiful and strong". The two performed in various countries throughout Europe and were considered two of the top aerial ballet performers in the Soviet Union. Pisarenkova performs on a suspended ring with no net. She believes it is not an art if there is a net. She once fell in Moscow and broke her hand. In 1989, they performed with the Kora Shrine Circus in Lewiston, Portland and Augusta.
